Building Ecologically Responsive Design for Excellence (BERDE) Project
The Philippine Green Building Council is presently developing the country's green building rating system. The proposed rating system is envisioned to facilitate green building action in industry and to enable the public to easily identify greener buildings. BERDE is presently being developed by a technical working group being formed by the PhilGBC. It’s a wonderful thing that more and more people are wising up and advocating better protection to our planet. Yet there are still many people who need to be educated on the importance of living green. It's not that difficult to put a little effort to save the earth, and make money at the same time. I probably won’t be getting a new hybrid car anytime soon, but there are other simple and inexpensive things that I do on a daily basis that keeps me going green. I make sure to switch off anything electronic if it is not in use, such as the T.V., lights, and even the heater. Since then, my electric bill has dropped significantly. I guess it helps that I’m a little compulsive when it comes to organizing. I enjoy separating every recyclable item into individual bins. It looks neat and makes it a lot easier for the recycling companies. I’ve trained my kids to collect all the aluminum cans around the house. When they’ve collected enough, we take the cans to the recycling station to redeem a certain amount of money for each pound of aluminum we bring in. However, I am so thrilled because I learned something new in an article I read. I wasn’t aware that people are also recycling cell phones. I can finally make money off of the many old cell phones I have tucked away in a drawer. Any extra cash I can make will help a great deal. I also found some great ideas that will come in handy during this holiday season. I can save money by using things around the house for gift-wraps, instead of spending a large amount on new accessories that will only be thrown out. I have old ribbons and strings in a huge container, and I know the attic is filled with tons of shoeboxes, which will make perfect homemade gift boxes. The extra cash I save will provide the budget help we need, especially with the way the economy is going. Of course, these tricks will help me out in many different areas, but winter is upon us and I know bigger bills are on the way.
